I like this quote a lot, especially coming from Pat Metheny, who is one of the best guitarists ever in my opinion.  A lot of people become to obsessed with guitar tricks and techniques, rather than focusing on the main purpose of the music, which could be a number of emotional options.  The guitar should be used as a means of expression, not self-indulgence.
